Parabasis, meaning “transgression,” is the moment in ancient Greek comedy in which the chorus turns to the audience and tells them exactly what the writer is thinking. It often comments on the writer’s intentions, political or existential thoughts surrounding the play, or opens up a dialogue with the audience. In our favorite form, a Parabasis is completely irrelevant to the plot.

Parabasis (the company) makes text-driven, dynamically designed plays that focus on the playwright. We believe in new play development through public performance, rather than being stuck in the dregs of closed-door, industry-invite readings and workshops. And, hey, maybe let's transgress a little, too!
